It's Happening. BDS Has Entered Mainstream Political Discourse, in the U.S. and Beyond

Share

It's happening. The past two months have seen an unprecedented level of ">mainstream media coverage and success, and it appears it's just the beginning.

On January 31st, our National Organizer Anna Baltzer will be debating at the historic Oxford Union, the world's most famous debating society, which has hosted the likes of Presidents Reagan, Nixon, and Carter; the Dalai Lama; Malcolm X; Yasser Arafat; Mother Theresa; Benazir Bhutto; and Senator John McCain, among many others.

Change comes from civil society, the center of power throughout historic social justice struggles. Now, we have an opportunity to carry your voices from the grassroots to a higher level of visibility, challenging the traditional gatekeepers of Israel's occupation and apartheid policies.

Debaters are expected to pay their way, as they are being provided the most high profile, prestigious debating platform in the world. But unlike heads of state and world-renowned figures, the US Campaign's financial capacity is limited.

Please donate today to help the US Campaign send Anna to bring your voices from the streets to the halls of Oxford University.

This email comes on the heels of three major breakthroughs in BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) campaigning against Veolia, a corporation heavily profiting from the Israeli occupation. One month ago, following an intense, two-year campaign to prevent Veolia from winning a $7.5 billion contract, Veolia withdrew from the bidding in North London, marking the most significant Veolia BDS victory to date.

Then, on January 11th, member group Davis Committee for Palestinian Rights (DCPR) broke the news that Veolia had withdrawn from bidding on a contract in Yolo County, California following a concerted campaign by DCPR and environmentalist groups, among others, to reject any contract with Veolia.

And yesterday, member group St. Louis Palestine Solidarity Committee (STL-PSC) announced a major breakthrough in a coalition-led campaign to Dump Veolia when two mayoral candidates took sides over the contract and the City's Comptroller asked for a public hearing about Veolia. In the footsteps of the member group-led historic hearings at UC Berkeley and Sonoma County, the occupation and its corporate profiteers will go on trial for all to see.

Now, building on fresh BDS victories spanning the Atlantic, Anna will travel from St. Louis to the United Kingdom to bring the discourse of grassroots BDS to a debate against Lord David Trimble, former Member of Parliament and the First Minister of Northern Ireland; Stephen Pollard, editor of The Jewish Chronicle; and Richard Perle, who served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, the Reagan Administration, Secretary of Defense and as Chairman of the Board under the Bush Administration.

Help us challenge these high profile defenders of the occupation by donating now to help us send Anna to debate against them.

Alongside Anna will be Ghada Karmi, Palestinian doctor, author, and academic; Peter Tatchell, British political campaigner and LGBT rights leader; and Ilan Pappe, Israeli New Historian and author of The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine.

It's time the coalition's work was brought to a higher level, but we can't do these things without you. Please donate today to help us send Anna to speak truth to power and challenge the occupation at the Oxford Union.
