Media Release: TIAA-CREF Investments in Human Rights Abuses to Be Challenged at Annual Meeting

July 13, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. This Tuesday, July 17, 2012, a coalition of human rights organizations will gather at the College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) annual shareholders meeting in New York City to demand that the pension fund giant divest from companies that profit from Israel's occupation of Palestinian land and violations of Palestinian rights.

TIAA-CREF shareholders who support divestment will attend the meeting in New York while others demonstrate their support for divestment outside the building and at TIAA-CREF offices around the country, including in Chicago (details below).

"Many shareholders choose to invest in TIAA-CREF because of its reputation of being socially responsible, as in its tagline, 'Financial Services for the Greater Good,'" said Anna Baltzer, National Organizer with the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation. "But there is nothing responsible about profiting from Caterpillar bulldozers used to destroy Palestinian homes and olive groves, Motorola technology used to defend stolen property, or Hewlett-Packard bio-scanners used to racially profile students on their way to school."

Last month, Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) removed Caterpillar Corporation from its list of socially responsible companies, prompting TIAA-CREF to drop Caterpillar from its Social Choice Fund and divest more than $72 million of the company's stock. The US Campaign is heartened by this initial act of divestment and hopes that TIAA-CREF will follow suit by selling all of its shares of Caterpillar and other companies involved in the denial of Palestinian rights.
