What Are You Doing for Israeli Apartheid Week 2013?

February 13th, 2013

It's that time of the year again! The 9th annual Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) is approaching quickly!

IAW is an international series of events held across the globe. IAW seeks to raise awareness about Israel's apartheid policies towards the Palestinians and to build support for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaigns against Israel until the basic rights of the Palestinian people are realized. IAW offers ordinary people around the world an opportunity to partake in something truly global. Last year's IAW was incredibly successful with participation by more than 215 cities, including dozens of US Campaign member groups!

This year, IAW will be held in March, during different weeks depending on the country. The official U.S. dates are March 4-8, but it is flexible (look at it as Israeli Apartheid Month).

Click here to email the IAW-US coordinators now if you plan to participate in IAW 2013!

Whether you are planning one event or ten, make sure to email the coordinators to add your city to the growing list of participants. After reviewing the basis of unity, you will have the opportunity to create a page for your city on the IAW website, where you can publicize your activities.

Remember that IAW is meant to strengthen your BDS work. Choose activities that will build towards and strengthen your local priorities, according to your particular context. IAW is an opportunity to tie in what you are working on to the larger, global movement.

Here are some ideas and things to keep in mind as you mobilize for IAW:

Possibilities include lectures, rallies, protests, cultural performances, and more. Be creative! What about a mock wall or checkpoint, a flash mob (have you seen our how-to kit?), a poetry reading, or street theater? Connect with IAW-US via Facebook and Twitter, where events and ideas will be posted throughout the coming weeks.

Make sure BDS is central to your activities:

Building a mock wall? Include a panel about companies constructing it like Elbit and Caterpillar. Erecting a mock checkpoint? Highlight biometric scanners, which Hewlett Packard sells to the Israeli military.

Hosting an event about settlements? Feature the Palestinian Freedom Riders, who boarded settler buses operated by Veolia on segregated roads. Raise awareness about SodaStream, made in an Israeli settlement. Sign this petition to boycott SodaStream, an initiative of the interfaith network of the US Campaign.

Talking about Gaza? Connect the violence to contractors Elbit and Northrop Grumman, which produce many of the weapons used against Palestinians in Gaza.

Discussing Palestinian prisoners? Feature G4S, which provides security systems for Israeli prisons.

Most importantly, what do you want people to do? Make it clear (contact us if you need help with this). The We Divest Campaign highlights all of the above corporations in the campaign to compel financial giant TIAA-CREF to divest from the occupation.

March 16th marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Rachel Corrie. The Rachel Corrie Foundation (RCF) for Peace and Justice will be posting events, activities, resources, and more on their website. If you do something to commemorate, share it with RCF. Rachel's mother Cindy wrote to us: "We are excited to learn about the ways that groups and individuals are keeping Rachel's spirit, work, and commitment alive." Make sure to make the connection to Caterpillar, which manufactured the bulldozer used to kill Rachel and others that are used every day to demolish the homes of Palestinian families.

How about a film screening? The makers of Roadmap to Apartheid -- an award-winning film illustrating the strong parallels between Apartheid Israel and Apartheid South Africa -- are making their film broadly available for groups to screen during IAW. Click here to contact the filmmakers for more info.

We can't wait to see all that this amazing coalition can accomplish!
