Obama Applauded for Freezing Missile Deliveries to Israel

Washington, DC (August 14)—The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation (US Campaign) applauded the Obama administration today for its reported freezing of Hellfire missile deliveries to Israel and its scrutiny of future weapons transfers. Details of these decisions were reported last night by the Wall Street Journal.
Josh Ruebner, Policy Director of the US Campaign and author of Shattered Hopes: Obama’s Failure to Broker Israeli-Palestinian Peace, stated: “The Obama administration’s decision to freeze the delivery of Hellfire missiles and scrutinize future weapons transfers to Israel is a long overdue, but welcome, step. For too long, US military aid has been misused by Israel to commit human rights abuses of Palestinians in violation of US laws such as the Arms Export Control Act and Foreign Assistance Act. We applaud the Obama administration for taking a first step to hold Israel accountable for the war crimes it is committing right now against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.”

The US Campaign calls on Members of Congress and the Obama administration to initiate a comprehensive investigation into Israel’s potential violations of US weapons laws and to hold Israel accountable for any human rights abuses committed against Palestinians with US weapons.

In a recent policy paper, the US Campaign laid out the legal and moral rationale for ending US military aid and weapons transfers to Israel.

The US Campaign has also joined with the Palestinian Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions National Committee (BNC) in calling for a global arms embargo on Israel.

The US Campaign is a national coalition of more than 400 organizations working to change US policy toward Israel and the Palestinians to support human rights, international law and equality.
