Experts Available for Commentary on Netanyahu Speech

Contact: US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, 202-332-0994

Washington, DC (March 2)—The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, a national coalition of more than 400 organizations working to change US policy toward Israel and the Palestinians to support human rights, international law and equality, offers the following experts for critical analysis of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu speech’s to Congress tomorrow.

“It is great to see many members of Congress committing to not attend Benjamin Netanyahu's speech. Our elected representatives are under no obligation to pay respect to a man like Netanyahu who has shown nothing but utter disrespect, not only to President Barack Obama, but to the policies of numerous American administrations on both sides of the aisle when it comes to his aggressive support of illegal settlement expansion.

His policies vis-a-vis the Palestinians and the denial of their basic rights is reason enough to steer clear of Netanyahu but add to this the partisan nature through which this even was concocted, the attempt to use Congress as a campaign prop in Israeli politics, the effort by Netanyahu to undercut an American President seeking an agreement in the American national interest, and it leaves one wondering why any self-respecting member of Congress would bother to attend this speech at all.”

Watch Munayyer discussing Netanyahu's speech yesterday on CNN.

“Benjamin Netanyahu has proven to be a terrible prognosticator when it comes to assessing other countries’ development of weapons of mass destruction. His 2002 prediction of Iraqi weapons was dead wrong and his scare-mongering about Iran’s nuclear capabilities has been contradicted by both US and Israeli intelligence agencies. Meanwhile, Israel’s status as a nuclear rogue state which refuses to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty goes unchallenged. Members of Congress seeking edification about the negotiations with Iran will once again be misinformed by Netanyahu. They should skip the speech.”

Recent articles by Ruebner on Netanyahu’s speech and the growing partisan nature of US support for Israel have appeared in The Hill.

The US Campaign, in coordination with Roots Action, Jewish Voice for Peace, Code Pink and American Muslims for Palestine, has been running the #SkipTheSpeech campaign. Supporters have sent more than 110,000 letters to Members of Congress calling on them to skip Netanyahu’s speech. To date, at least 40 Members of Congress have publicly confirmed that they are skipping the speech. To view photos of the petition deliveries to Capitol Hill, click here.
