Growing Older & (Hopefully) Wiser with the US Campaign

Help Celebrate My 40th Birthday

I spent part of my 40th birthday at the Palestine Center speaking about Obamaís ďreassessmentĒ of relations with Israel.
Check it out.

I've got to be honest with you. The fact that I turned 40 earlier this week has got me a bit freaked out. Wow, times flies. I'm certainly older, a lot more gray (the hair gel does a good job of hiding it), and hopefully a bit wiser than when I started working for the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation back in 2003.

As I enter this next decade of my life, I've been reflecting on all the things I have that I'm grateful for: a loving wife and family, a home, clean water to drink, healthy food to eat, and good health.

I don't drive the flashiest car (it's a Kia) or live in a mansion (we live in a townhouse), but thatís not what matters in life.

The fact that I earn a living wage, get health care and retirement benefits while working for an organization whose mission is so important to me makes me an extremely fortunate person.

Thanks to your generous support, I get to wake up every day to speak, write and organize to end our country's support for Israelís oppression of the Palestinian people, a goal which I know you share.

So for my 40th birthday, there's really only two things I ask of you: send some birthday wishes my way and donate $40 (or whatever amount is right for you) to support our work.

I'll tell you a secret. I'm working really hard to put myself (and all my coworkers) out of business. We all long for the day when Palestinians achieve the freedom, justice and equality so long denied them under Israelís apartheid rule and we can close up shop.

We've obviously still got a long way to go before that happens, but I've never been more optimistic than today about our ultimate success as boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaigns flourish, public opinion shifts to our side, and politicians come under unprecedented grassroots pressure to change policy.

Your generous donation to the US Campaign will enable us to continue to expand, be more effective, and hasten that day when we can close down our operations knowing that together we played a major part in ending US support for Israelís denial of human rights toward Palestinians.

Thank you for enabling me to have the privilege and honor to do this work.

Sincerely yours,

Josh Ruebner,
Policy Director

PS: Why does President Obama today face the exact same predicament on the question of Palestine that FDR confronted back in 1943? Check out my brief talk at the Palestine Center to find out why.
