Pro-Israel Lobby Alarmed by Growth of Boycott, Divestment Movement

In his speech, Kohr voiced great alarm at the growth in solidarity with the Palestinian people in recent months. The unprecedented growth of the international solidarity movement is a grass-roots response to the crimes committed by Israel during its murderous 22-day assault on Gaza, and the tight siege of the territory that it maintains to this day. Solidarity with Palestine is being expressed in many different ways. One of these is the international campaign for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel. Support for BDS has grown considerably in recent months, which is why the AIPAC leader highlighted it as a cause for particular concern.

Twenty New York activists performed near a street fair at Greeley Square in Manhattan on Saturday, calling for a boycott of communications giant Motorola until it stops providing technology to the Israeli army and settlement movement. It was the third action organized by the New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel (NYCBI) and the first of a planned series of summer actions around the city to publicize the campaign. Motorola has been targeted for boycott by the U.S. Campaign to End the Occupation and groups throughout the country because of their business with the Israeli army and illegal Israeli settlements.

Caterpillar's board members faced criticism of their business practices from members of Jewish Voice for Peace, the Sisters of Loretto, and Chicagoans Against Apartheid in Palestine. Katherine Fuchs, National Organizer for the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation spoke at the meeting as well, on behalf of shareholder Boston Coalition for Palestinian Rights. Repeatedly, Caterpillar CEO Jim Owens told those in attendance that if they don't like the way Caterpillar operates, then they don't have to hold on to their stock, effectively endorsing divestment from Caterpillar.

On June 16th, the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation published an open letter in which the organization calls for the halt of military aid to Israel, on the basis of the Israeli occupation of Palestine. In addition to the campaign to withhold US government aid to Israel, many organizations and activists are working to prevent private businesses and corporations from trading with Israel on areas which are related to military and settlement activities.

Today, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs held a “mark-up” session on the FY2010 budget. I know, this stuff sounds pretty arcane. Actually though, it’s a very important step in the budget process.

Despite the rain on Wednesday morning, several intrepid activists picketed outside Halton Cat on Columbia Boulevard in Northeast Portland. The small, but spirited group of protesters held the action in solidarity with the national day of action against Caterpillar, timed to coincide with the company's annual shareholder meeting.
