SodaStream Culture Jamming on Amazon

BDS activists have been posting reviews on Amazon in an effort to educate consumers about occupation-profiteer SodaStream and its exploitation of Palestinian labor, land, and resources.

There are two ways you can join in this campaign:
  • Vote up 1-star reviews so that they are more prominently featured.
    • Go to http://amzn.to/1gEIhFV.
    • Locate the reviews about SodaStream manufacturing its products in illegal Israeli settlements and the company's abuse of Palestinian rights.
    • Under each review there is question: Was this review helpful to you? Click the "Yes" button.
    • You must be logged into your Amazon account to take action.
  • Write your own review on Amazon. Find tips and sample reviews from the US Palestinian Community Network here

TELL BARTELL: Stop Selling SodaStream

From Palestine Solidarity Committee- Seattle and Northwest BDS Coalition

We would like to take the international campaign to a local Seattle target.  Bartell Drugs still sells SodaStream, and Bartell is a locally-operated, family-run Puget Sound chain with headquarters in West Seattle.  Many of us shop in Bartell stores, and many of us are even recognized by staff in our neighborhood Bartell store.  With enough local pressure, Bartell would be able to decide at the local level to stop selling SodaStream.

We have already flashmobbed the downtown Third Ave Bartell store, and last May during Nakba Day flashmobbing we handed them a letter telling them why they should stop selling SodaStream.  Now we need to spread that message to Bartell stores all over Seattle and Puget Sound.

In early November, we phoned and faxed our concerns to George and Jean Bartell, CEOs of Bartell Drugs.  We asked for a meeting and have gotten no response so far.

We have now prepared a letter, revised from the letter we delivered in May, which tells Bartell why they should stop selling SodaStream.  You can use our letter — attached as a Word.doc and pasted below — or personalize and adapt it as you need, either by email or postal mail.

During the Days of Action Against SodaStream, Nov 29 - Dec 10, will you TELL BARTELL to stop selling SodaStream?  Will you email or mail or phone Bartell?  Or print and hand-deliver a copy of the letter to staff at your local Bartell?

TELL BARTELL:
PHONE at  1-877-BARTELL (1-877-227-8355)
MAIL at  Bartell Drugs
4025 Delridge Way SW, Suite 400,
Seattle, WA 98106
POST ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE:
https://www.facebook.com/BartellDrugs

We’d like to count you if you Tell Bartell.
Email Linda Bevis at lindabevis1@aol.com.  (Don’t forget the pesky digit “1” in the address.)   If you email Bartell, bcc us.   If you mail or phone or hand-deliver or have an interaction with or conversation with staff at Bartell, please email and tell us about it!

Bartell is a local opportunity for us.  Tell Bartell to stop selling Sodastream and all other products of Israeli apartheid.

Sur La TaBLITZ

This online action is being promoted by Jewish Voice for Peace-Seattle. (See update at end!)

We need your help! Sur La Table is erasing negative comments posted on their website about SodaStream. We need to show them they cannot censor the truth about Israeli Occupation!

Spend 2 minutes now to help us stop Sur La Table from censoring the truth about SodaStream. Join us: write a review to help replace the censored reviews of SodaStream now!

Make sure to take a screenshot and send it to seattle@jvp.org in case they delete yours!

Dozens of activists and concerned consumers have been posting thoughtful comments on Sur La Table's website explaining what we think of SodaStream, a product made in an illegal settlement in the West Bank, in violation of international law and at the expense of justice for Palestinians.

Rather than attend to the serious concerns about the harm caused by SodaStream, Sur La Table has responded by erasing the comments. But the good news is that we are posting new ones faster than they can delete them. Sur La Table is paying attention, and we we need to continue acting fast to show that we aren't going anywhere!

Please take a minute now to write a replacement review on the Sur La Table website! Follow this link to create an account. And then go to this page and post a comment.

Together, we can burst the SodaStream Bubble!
JVP - Seattle

PS. Please help us spread the word far and wide! Share these links on FB, Twitter, and with all your lists! Make sure to tag SurLaTable. Here are some sample tweets:

  • .@Sur_La_Table, why don't you want your customers to know that SodaStream is made in an illegal settlement? #BoycottSodastream
  • .@Sur_La_Table is censoring consumer concern about products made in violation of international law. #BoycottSodastream
  • .@Sur_La_Table, the truth about the Israeli Occupation can't be erased like a comment on your website. #BoycottSodastream

Sur La TaBlitz: Take Action Online to Deshelve SodaStream- Phase 1

What: Blitz Sur La Table’s SodaStream staff favorite page with reviews that explain SodaStream's connection to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

Why: SodaStream is an Israeli product made in an illegal settlement in the West Bank, further entrenching the Occupation. Jewish Voice for Peace Seattle has organized a campaign to demand that Sur La Table deshelve SodaStream. This campaign is in response to the Palestinian civil society call for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions of Israel.

How:
3 simple steps: Make an account, post a review, take a snapshot and email it to JVP!

Step 1: Click on this link to register for an account

Step 2: Click on this link to arrive at the SodaStream product page. Scroll all the way down until you find the reviews box and write a review (suggestions below)!

Step 3: Take a screenshot and send it to seattle@jvp.org.

The key message you want to include in your reviews is:
The SodaStream corporation entrenches the Israeli occupation of Palestine while it directly profits from the occupation.

Here are some subpoints:

  • SodaStream is a product made in violation of international law. SodaStream’s main production plant is located on confiscated Palestinian farmland.
  • SodaStream exploits Palestinian labor to create their products.
  • SodaStream is paid for in part by the Israeli government. SodaStream receives generous tax incentives from the Israeli and local governments to establish their factory in the West Bank on Palestinian land.
  • Every purchase of SodaStream contributes to illegal settlements in Palestine. The factory pays taxes to the Israeli settlement, Ma’aleh Adumim, not the the Palestinian Authority.
  • Expansion of Israeli settlements, such as Ma’aleh Adumim where the main SodaStream factory is located, erodes Palestinian territorial contiguity.

UPDATE: We need your help! In the next two days we need 100 phone calls to Sur La Table's customer service to show we won't stand for censorship. Call: 1-800-243-0852  to register your complaint today!

People in solidarity with Palestine have attempted to put over 50 reviews up on the Sur La Table SodaStream page. Sur La Table has censored all of the reviews, taking them down or not allowing them to be posted at all. You can see some of these reviews here.

Call Sur La Table's customer service and tell them they cannot censor the truth about SodaStream and the Israeli occupation.

Call: 1-800-243-0852

Sample Script if you attempted to post a review:
My review about SodaStream was censored this weekend. Your website includes factually incorrect information, claiming SodaStream is made in Israel when in fact it is made in an illegal settlement in the West Bank. Please stop keeping this information from your customers---- you cannot censor the truth about SodaStream and the Israeli occupation. Do the ethical thing and deshelve SodaStream today!

Sample Script if you haven't attempted to post a review:

Also, make sure to submit your video for our 2013 Super Bowl SodaStream Spoof Ad ContestA supporter sent us these lyrics and let us know we can share them with others who might be interested in using them. Check them out below and make sure to submit your videos to boycottsodastream@gmail.com!

From our member group JVP-DC.
Oy vey, I must tell you, SodaStream,
Your product really makes me squeam.
I wouldn’t have to write this verse
If what you’re doing were not perverse.
You know it’s illegal where you make it,
It’s just so exploitive, I can’t take it.
If in the West Bank you hadn’t settled,
I wouldn’t be so awfully nettled.
My friends and I won’t buy your fizzy
In hopes your factory won’t be busy.
If you weren’t using Palestinian land,
You wouldn’t find your product banned.
So stop production, move your plant,
Your sales might take an upward slant.
‘Til then your new type carbonation
To us is just an abomination.

SodaStream Holiday Songs!

Check out these holiday songs put together by our member group American Friends Service Committee that you can use for your SodaStream actions!

SodaStream the Settlement Product
(to the tune of “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer”)

SodaStream’s a settlement product,
Made in Mishor Adumim
It’s built on stolen land,
And this really makes us scream

All of the other nations,
Boycott occupation.
So we’re outside of Macy’s
To say no to exploitation!

Sodastream hides their crimes,
So we’re here to say,
Macy’s with your store so bright,
Don’t you care about human rights?

If you deshelve SodaStream,
Then we will all shout with glee,
“Macy’s, thank you for helping,
make occupation history!”

SodaStream is Spoiling our Town
(to the tune of “Santa Claus is coming to Town”)

Oh, you’d better not shop
You’d better not buy
Each dollar spent here helps
Fund apartheid
SodaStream is spoiling, our town

We’re making them shvitz
We’ll make them think twice
We’re gonna boycott until they
Act nice
SodaStream is spoiling, our town

They’re stealing land and water
From towns in the West Bank
Although they make your drink taste good
Rots your soul for goodness sake!

Oh, you’d better not shop
You’d better not buy
Each dollar spent here helps
Fund apartheid
SodaStream is spoiling, our town!

Friends Don't Let Friends Buy SodaStream!

Actions from our member groups American Friends Service Committee- West Region and Sacramento Area Peace Action.

SodaStream, a gadget for making carbonated water at home, is made in an illegal Israeli settlement on stolen Palestinian land in violation of international law! Folks who care about human rights and are out shopping for the holidays, could end up inadvertently buying SodaStream because they don’t know the facts. To learn more yourself about why you should not support SodaStream, see here

♥ Please help prevent this from happening by signing this petition asking stores to stop selling SodaStream, and by asking your friends, family, colleagues, etc. to do the same!  Email them, post on Facebook, etc!

:( If you know of anyone who has unfortunately made this purchase, ask them to return SodaStream to the store, along with a letter explaining why they cannot ethically purchase this product. And refer them to one of the many SodaStream alternatives!

♦ If you see SodaStream on sale, please speak to the manager and fill out a comment card asking the store to stop selling it.  You can also contact store CEOs directly; contact information is posted at: http://sacbds.org/store-contacts/.

Stores selling SodaStream include:  Bed, Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, COSTCO, Crate & Barrel, JC Penney, Kohls, Macy’s, Sears, Staples, Sur La Table, Target, Walmart, and Williams-Sonoma.

Flash Mob Tells Bed Bath & Beyond: "Stop Selling Illegal Israeli Settlement Products!"

The three groups involved in this action -- CODEPINK, 14 Friends of Palestine, and Keep Hope Alive -- are all coalition members of the US Campaign, which offers its exclusive flash mob resources here.

Brides, Professional Choir and Minister Flash Mob at Bed Bath & Beyond with Message:
"Stop Selling Illegal Israeli Settlement Products!"

Action in Solidarity with Global Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement

[LARKSPUR]: On Saturday, December 10, International Human Rights Day, a flash mob took over the wedding registry section of the Bed Bath & Beyond in Larkspur.  The flash mob consisted of a mock wedding in which four brides committed to boycott illegal Israeli settlement products, namely Ahava cosmetics and SodaStream home carbonation systems, and local Reverend Dr. Walt Davis pronounced the brides "married to a life of peace and justice."  The Justice Voices choir sung a parody of "Ode to Joy" that asked Bed Bath & Beyond to deshelve these products.  Store employees asked the flash mobbers to leave the store and called the police.  No arrests were made.  Caroling continued outside the store where the group received positive feedback from holiday shoppers.

“We hope Bed Bath & Beyond CEO Steven Temares hears our plea and stops selling products that are in clear violation of international law,” said Rae Abileah, flash mob "bride" and co-director of CODEPINK.  “Consumers have a right to know the ugly truth behind Ahava beauty products: they’re stealing Palestinian land! SodaStream is marketed as an environmentally responsible product, but the destruction of life, land and peace brought about by this settlement industrial zone is anything but environmentally responsible. Save a few plastic bottles at the expense of trashing Palestinian land and people?  We don’t think so.”

Ahava and SodaStream products are fraudulently labeled as “Made in Israel”, but are in fact produced in illegal settlements under the conditions of the military occupation in the West Bank, outside the internationally-recognized borders of Israel.  Ahava cosmetics are manufactured in the illegal settlement of Mitzpe Shalem in the occupied Palestinian West Bank. Ahava’s fraudulent labeling is under investigation in the UK and in The Netherlands. The Stolen Beauty Boycott and international boycott pressure have successfully pressured many stores to drop Ahava.  Stores that have pulled Ahava from their shelves include Canada’s major department store The Bay, UK retailer John Lewis, the National Cathedral in DC, the U.N. commissary in Vienna, and many more.

A recent report by the Israeli research project Who Profits from the Occupation describes SodaStream’s illegal settlement activities, exposes its fraudulent labeling practices and investigates its exploitative labor practices.  SodaStream is another occupation profiteer located the illegal industrial zone called Mishor Adumim, one of the largest land expropriations of Palestinian land in the West Bank, which prevents a future contiguous Palestinian state.

"This month, we mark three years since the Israel's deadly assault on Gaza that killed about 1,400 Palestinian men, women, and children. Let us all recommit ourselves to ending US financial and diplomatic support to Israel, and to supporting the inspiring, growing, global, Palestinian-led  movement for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions until Palestinians enjoy the freedom, equality, and justice that they deserve,” said Anna Baltzer, flash mob "bride" and national organizer with the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation.

“I invited the CODEPINK women to Marin so that we could do a boycott action at our local Bed, Bath, and Beyond,” said Jane Jewell, founder of 14 Friends of Palestine and Justice Voices. “BDS is one of the most important non-violent activities we can do to oppose the cruel Israeli Occupation of Palestine that causes such terrible suffering to the Palestinian people. I consider it the duty of those of us who enjoy a life of freedom and privilege to help those who do not. If I lived under horrendous oppression like the Palestinians do, I would like to think that somewhere in the world there were people looking out for me. "

The action was coordinated by 14 Friends of Palestine, CODEPINK Women for Peace, and Keep Hope Alive.

More information on both campaigns is available at www.stolenbeauty.org and www.codepink.org/boycottsodastream.

Flash mob in El Cerrito, CA Bed Bath & Beyond protests Soda Stream

A flash mob in an El Cerrito, CA branch of Bed Bath & Beyond this month protested the store's sales of Soda Stream, a soft drink product made in an illegal settlement with exploited Palestinian labor.

The approximately two dozen protesters wore shirts emblazoned with ""Boycott Israel 'til Palestine is Free," and sang and chanted in the Bed Bath & Beyond before moving outside to march and hand out fliers.  The store called the police, who declined to interfere, saying the protesters would leave soon without causing harm.  The flash mob included several members of US Campaign ember groups such as NorCal Friends of Sabeel, Bay Area Jewish Voice for Peace and CODEPINK.

A video of the Bed Bath & Beyond flash mob can be seen here:

FLASH MOB: Mock Wedding Promotes Ahava & Soda Stream Boycott at Bed, Bath, & Beyond!

Activists from CODEPINK (US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation coalition member group) recently staged a mock wedding at Bed, Bath, & Beyond in Los Angeles.

Four CODEPINK women dressed in brides dresses strolled through the store and mall answered the reverend's big question:

"Do you promise to tell your fellow brides to not register with Bed, Bath & Beyond until it stops stocking illegal Israeli settlement products Ahava and SodaStream?"...

"Do you promise to honor and obey international law?"...

"Do you promise to cherish the right of Palestinians to use their own natural resources?"

etc... to which the brides answered a resounding,

"WE DO!"

Watch the wonderful video below. CODEPINK invites others to "Become a BDS Bride!"
