Outside the Ark: An Artist's Journey In Occupied Palestine
Sunday, November 2nd 2003 6pm
New York, New York

Artist Ellen O’Grady began painting the 2002-2003 Outside the Ark series upon her return from an eight week trip to Palestine. O’Grady, who lived and worked in the West Bank and Gaza from 1989-1996, returned in the summer of 2002 with the International Solidarity Movement. She spent much of that time in the Nablus area assisting Palestinians in need of health care, monitoring Israeli checkpoints, listening to stories, and painting portraits. The twenty-five mixed-media paintings that constitute the Outside the Ark series tell the stories of individual Palestinians living under occupation in the
West Bank. The paintings follow a story that Ellen O’Grady will perform/recite at the opening.
