Simon Shaheen is one of the most significant Arabic musicians, performers and composers of his generation, and is accepted as the greatest living Middle Eastern instrumentalist. A Palestinian, born in Tarshiha in Galilee, educated
at the Jerusalem Academy of Music, Manhattan School of Music, and Columbia University, he now makes his home in New York. He has collaborated with many internationally renowned artists, written music for several films, including Sheltering Sky and Malcolm X, in addition to a number of theatrical
productions, and was the first Arabic musician to appear in the Grammy Awards.
His work not only looks back on the history of Arabic music, but also continues to push forward, embracing many different styles in the process. Lauded as perhaps the greatest ambassador of Arab world music, Shaheen has recorded a
number of solo albums, as well as collaborations with other musicians, and with the band he formed, Qantara.
A Palestinian, Shaheen will bring his remarkable talent to Symphony Space listeners in this not-to-be-missed concert for appreciators of Arabic and world music.
