Urge Members of Congress to Attend Capitol Hill Briefing Regarding Wadi Foquin

November 13th, 2013

Your Advocacy Helped Make this Briefing Possible, Now Help Pack the Room

We’ve got some important news to share with you. At noon on Tuesday, Nov. 19, Friends of Wadi Foquin, a project of US Campaign member group Buena Vista United Methodist Church, will be holding a Capitol Hill briefing at the Capitol Visitor Center, Room HVC 201, on the dire human rights situation facing Palestinians in Wadi Foquin, a West Bank village near Bethlehem, who live under Israeli military occupation.

Please take a minute to write and call your Members of Congress and encourage them and their staff to attend this important briefing.

This Congressional briefing is a great example of how our combined efforts are making a difference on Capitol Hill. Earlier this year, thousands of you contacted your Members of Congress about Wadi Foquin and, as a result, the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission sent a letter to Secretary of State John Kerry expressing its concern about Israel’s  reported human rights violations in Wadi Foquin.

In response, the State Department acknowledged that  "it is important for the Wadi Foquin community to have access to their surface water resources and live without contamination of their lands and olive trees."

Unfortunately, just weeks after the State Department's response, Israeli settlers near the village of Wadi Foquin inundated 24 acres of the villagers’ farmland with wastewater, destroying the villagers’ crops and rendering the land unfit for agricultural use, continuing a longstanding pattern of depriving villagers of access to their land. Previously, the Israeli government had already expropriated 94% of the villages' land to construct illegal settlements.

Next week, Ahmad Sukar, the Wadi Foquin Village Council president and others from the village and surrounding area will finally get the chance to tell their story to a Capitol Hill audience about the human rights abuses they suffer under Israeli military occupation. Please make sure that your Members of Congress and their staff hear what they have to say.

Wadi Foquin, like many other Palestinian villages in the West Bank, is under threat of extinction from Israel’s land expropriations and related attempts to drive Palestinians off their land to expand its illegal settlements, and it is important that the voices of these villagers be heard by U.S. policy makers.  Please contact your Senators and Representative today and urge them to attend this critical briefing so that they can better understand the real word impact of their support for Israeli military occupation and apartheid policies toward Palestinians.
