Urge Senate Not to Endorse Israel’s Illegal Wall

‘Washington Wednesday’, October 6, 2004
ACTION REQUESTED: Urge your Senators not to endorse the illegal wall Israel is building in the Palestinian West Bank.
BACKGOUND: On July 9, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that the wall Israel is building in the Palestinian West Bank is “contrary to international law” and that Israel must cease its construction, dismantle it, and pay reparations to those damaged by it.
Members of Congress who support Israel’s military occupation responded by introducing legislation condemning the ICJ ruling and backing Israel’s illegal wall.  The House quickly passed a resolution to this effect in July but a sizeable number of Members of Congress voted against it or abstained, partly as a result of your efforts.
A similar resolution—Senate Resolution 408—was introduced in the Senate on July 20 but has not been voted on.

UPDATE: On September 9, the US Campaign delivered to each Senator a petition signed by 135 organizations urging Senators not to support Senate Resolution 408.

To date, the Senate has not voted on this resolution.  The Senate is due to adjourn on Friday, October 8.  Make sure that the Senate doesn't pass this resolution before adjourning.  Contact your Senators today to express your opinon.

Your efforts to educate your Senators about the importance of following a policy of human rights and international law toward Israel and Palestine can make a huge difference!  Here’s how to get involved:
1)      Get your organization to endorse a letter to each Senator urging him/her to vote no or abstain on Senate Resolution 408.  Endorsements are due by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 6.  To endorse the letter, please visit: http://www.endtheoccupation.org/petition.php?pid=5
2)      Contact your Senators personally and urge them to vote no or abstain on Senate Resolution 408.  Constituent phone calls, faxes, and emails are important in educating your Senators.  Talking points for and the text of the resolution are at: http://www.endtheoccupation.org/article.php?id=375

Links to detailed contact information for your Members of Congress can be found at our Congressional Report Card at: http://www.endtheoccupation.org/article.php?list=type&type=59
3)      Circulate a petition to your Senators urging them to vote no or abstain on Senate Resolution 408.  Constituents in Washington State have circulated a petition to Sen. Patty Murray, who cosponsored the resolution, asking her to withdraw her sponsorship.  More than 500 Washington voters have signed the petition so far.  If you are a Washington voter and would like to add your name to the petition, please send your contact information to dadkin@attglobal.net. The text of the petition can be found at: http://www.endtheoccupation.org/article.php?id=384.

Feel free to borrow language from it, our letter to Senators, and/or our talking points.  If you’re circulating a petition to your Senators, please let us know at congress@endtheoccupation.org so that we can coordinate with you.
4)      Write an op-ed or a letter to the editor in opposition to Senate Resolution 408.  Send your op-ed or letter to the editor to your Senators regardless of whether or not it gets published.  If you get published, please send a copy to us at us_campaign@endtheoccupation.org so that we can post it.  For your article, feel free to use language from our talking points below.  Contact information for your local media can be found at: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/dbq/media/
ABOUT ‘WASHINGTON WEDNESDAY’:  The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation and its member organizations initiate an action alert—‘Washington Wednesday’—the first Wednesday of each month.  Through its network of more than 120 Congressional District Coordinators in 140 Congressional districts and 35 states, we are organizing a nation-wide effort to educate Members of Congress about the need to base US foreign policy toward Israel and Palestine on human rights and international law.  If you’d like to get involved, please email us at congress@endtheoccupation.org.
