Statement of Solidarity with University of Texas Palestine Solidarity Committee

November 17th, 2015

UT Professor Ami Pedahzur physically intimidates PSC member trying to read a statement.

On Friday, November 13, 2015, 12 members of the Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) at the University of Texas at Austin (UT) disrupted a public event hosted by UT's Institute for Israeli Studies. The students were met with physical force and intimidation, including by UT professor Ami Pedahzur who physically pressed his body against a PSC member, nose-to-nose. Students were detained by police and one was banned from returning to campus as a former student even though he was attending a public event. Prof. Pedahzur and others were not detained or questioned. Watch Video here and Full story here.

The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation stands in solidarity with the University of Texas (UT) Palestine Solidarity Committee (PSC) and is appalled by the physical intimidation used against them as they peacefully attempted to read a 2-minute speech countering an official campus event by a former Israeli soldier last Friday, including intimidation of the students by UT Professor Ami Pedahzur.

The UT Institute for Israeli Studies has long served to whitewash Israelís crimes against the Palestinian people on UTís campus, while Palestinian students are denied official channels to speak about their ongoing oppression under Israelís apartheid and settler colonial regime. UTís selective detention and punishment of PSC -- while those affiliated with the Institute for Israeli Studies who physically targeted the students suffer no consequences -- is further evidence of UTís oppressive campus atmosphere.

Peaceful disruption of power is a time-honored component of social change and Professor Pedahzurís intimidation and denigration of Palestinian voices should have no place in any professional academic setting.

The US Campaign salutes PSC members for their courage and integrity and stands with them in asserting their right to free speech and peaceful disruption as part of the broader struggle for freedom and justice for the Palestinian people.

The US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation is a coalition of more than 300 organizations nationwide working to end all forms of U.S. support for Israelís occupation and apartheid policies. We support for freedom, justice, and equality for all.
