"A Nakba and Apartheid that Dare Not Speak their Names" To Commemorate the 1948 ethnic cleansing of Palestine known as Al-Nakba featuring UCLA Professor of English and Comparative Literature, Saree Makdisi, author of Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation. Dr. Makdisi's address will be followed by a panel discussion with Palestinians who have suffered dispossession or occupation. Films on both the 1948-50 refugees and oral history interviews of the survivors will be shown from 3-5 P.M.

“Palestine Today—Resistance and Everyday Life in the West Bank” A slideshow and talk by Peter Chabarek of Global Exchange, a human rights organization based in San Francisco. Peter will show highlights of his two week journey through the West Bank in November 2009. The Global Exchange group met with non-violent activists, lawyers, farmers, craftsmen, teachers, dramatists, businessmen, and others to investigate the current state of affairs in Palestine and the conflict with Israel. The group traveled throughout the West Bank, including Ramallah, Bethlehem, Jenin, Nablus, Hebron, farm villages, as well as East Jerusalem. Tuesday, June 8, 7pm, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 40th and Donald, Eugene. FREE and open to the public. Sponsored by Unitarian Social Concerns Committee and the Al-Nakba Awareness Project

A report on the present situation in Gaza: the political and humanitarian crisis and hopes for the future. Gerri Haynes is past president and board member of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility and past National PSR board member and treasurer. Since 1993, she has organized and led delegations to the Middle East: Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. She visits Palestine at least once a year. As a nurse and Palliative Care Consultant with a specialty in Grief and Bereavement, she is on the affiliate clinical faculty of the University of Washington School of Nursing and has taught classes in Iraq, Palestine and Israel. Most recently, in May, 2010, Gerri and her husband, physician Bob Haynes led a medical delegation to serve in Gaza.
