Hold Israel Accountable to the US Arms Export Control Act

To: President & Members of Congress

I am troubled that innocent Palestinian civilians are being killed by Israel with weapons provided by the United States. In 2005, the United States will give Israel $2.2 billion worth of weapons to maintain its 37 year-old military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. My tax dollars should promote peace and justice, not military occupation and the killing of innocents.

I call upon you to investigate and hold Israel accountable to its violations of US Arms Export Control Act (Public Law 90-829), which limits the use of U.S. weapons given or sold to a foreign country to “internal security” and “legitimate self-defense” and prevents their use against civilians. Israel’s use of these weapons in its foreign military occupation of Palestine can never be justified as “internal security”. I also call upon you to halt arms transfers to Israel until it complies with human rights standards and international law, as required by the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (Public Law 87-195), which states "No assistance may be provided…to the government of any country which engages in a consistent pattern of gross violations of internationally recognized human rights”.
